Transition for Parents

For young children, change can be difficult. There are many things we can do to support the transitions and changes that children experience.

What is transition?

Simply put, a transition is the movement from one place to the next.

What does that mean for young children?

  • Transitions occur when children move from crawling to walking.
  • Transitions occur when children move from eating baby food to eating solid foods.
  • Transitions occur when children go from home to childcare or school.
  • Transitions occur when children go from Grandma's to home.
  • Transitions occur when children go from playtime to naptime.
  • Transitions occur when children go from preschool to Kindergarten.

Transitions are occuring throughout each day for your child. Some children manage these transitions with ease, while others have full blown meltdowns with each change. Each of these responses, and everything in between, is developmentally appropriate. The challenge for adults is how to help support children through each of these changes.

Change can be scary, which is why so many of these transitions create emotional reactions in children. We've gathered some resources to help you help your child adjust to all of the transitions they might experience.
